Curious about Mah Jongg but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly class is designed to take you from “I’ve always wanted to learn” to confidently playing the game.
We'll Focus On
In this 2.25-hour, instructor-led session, you’ll learn the foundations of American Mah Jongg, including:
-
How the tiles work and how a game flows
-
How to read and use the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card
-
The basics of building a hand, drawing, discarding, and calling tiles
-
Common terminology and table etiquette
-
Tips that help the game click faster for new players
Classes are intentionally kept small, with a maximum of 12 students and an instructor-to-student ratio of no more than 1:6 (our goal is 1:4). This allows plenty of hands-on guidance, questions, and supported play as you learn.
Our classes are grounded in official American Mah Jongg League rules, giving you a foundation that transfers seamlessly to any social group or house style.
This Class is Ideal for
-
Brand new players with no experience.
-
Players who are self-taught and want to learn the actual rules.
-
Players who attended a "101" class but, due to larger class size, didn't get their questions answered.
No prior experience is required. Tiles and all game equipment are provided. We will even loan you a NMJL Card.
Logistics
Our lesson studio is located on the second floor and is accessed by a flight of stairs. Unfortunately, the building does not have an elevator.
If stairs are a concern for you, please reach out before booking. We’re always happy to help you determine whether a class is a good fit or discuss alternative options.
Please note
-
The National Mah Jongg League card is not included in the class fee. You may bring your own or borrow one for the lesson. We will have some available for purchase after the lesson as well.
-
You’re welcome to bring your own drink and a non-messy snack; we have basic snacks and water available.
Whether you’re brand new or have watched friends play and want to finally join the table, this class gives you a strong, confidence-building foundation to continue playing.
