Strategy: The Charleston- Choosing Hands
You know how to play. Now it’s time to learn how to play to win.
Class Description
This strategy-focused class is designed for players who are comfortable with the mechanics of American Mah Jongg and want to improve their results at the table. Rather than teaching rules, this session focuses on decision-making, hand selection, and staying flexible to increase your odds of winning. In this 2-hour hands-on session, we will focus on two of the most important (and often misunderstood) parts of the game: -The Charleston – Learn what to pass, what to keep, and how to shape a flexible, winning hand from the very start. -Choosing a Hand – Develop the skills to read your tiles against the card, identify multiple options, and avoid committing too early. Through guided activities and real-game scenarios, you’ll practice making smarter choices, adapting your strategy, and thinking like a more advanced player. Classes remain intentionally small, with a maximum of 16 students and an instructor-to-student ratio of no more than 1:8, allowing for thoughtful discussion and individualized guidance. This class is ideal for: -Intermediate players who know the official NMJL rules and want to win more often -Graduates of Intro and Guided Play classes ready to sharpen strategy -Players who understand the card but struggle with hand selection or pivots Please note: -A current National Mah Jongg League card is required (not included). -Tiles and game equipment are provided. -We will have water and basic snacks available; you’re welcome to bring your own drink or non-messy snack. This class helps you move from reacting to the game to playing with purpose and confidence.
